The subject of loot boxes

🕒 Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Modern games, including RPGs, have integrated loot boxes into their economy. This has become a norm, even an expectation in many franchises.

Apparized in mass in free-to-play games as a legitimate funding method, over time we have seen numerous abuses, whether it's their appearance in pay-to-play games (even at high prices), or the way they are used, often abusively and playing on the psychological need of the user to progress faster.

For Sidyq, we have chosen to limit this system. Since it is a main part of our economic model, we cannot really ignore it, but we still strive to stay away from the pay-to-win model often criticized, rightly so. As players, we have experienced it through the years on various games, and although having a small boost for progression can be interesting in an occasional way, it remains important to preserve a fair and enjoyable gameplay experience for us.

🎰 Loot boxes: What are they?

A loot box is:

An object that the player can open (often against money or payment) to obtain a random reward.

Often inspired by the gacha model, they play on:

  • The frustration and hope of rarity
  • The uncertainty as a retention lever
  • The monetization of repeated attempts

🚫 What that implies (and why we are reluctant)

Sidyq is a strategy game. And a strategy game relies on:

  • Clear decisions
  • Readable resources
  • A just progression

Loot boxes, they:

  • Distort the relationship between effort and reward
  • Encourage addictive behavior
  • Fragment the experience between the lucky and the unlucky

🧠 A fully transparent progression

In Sidyq:

  • Monsters are obtained through gameplay, at the end of combat
  • Their chances of appearance are known, transparent
  • There is no drawing, nor hidden lottery

What matters, is your game performance and your build choices.

💬 And monetization then?

Sidyq is not against monetization — but it must respect the player.

This is why the only loot boxes you will find in the game are chests whose content is:

  • Purely cosmetic
  • Without impact on balance

We believe that it's possible to be financially sustainable without manipulating the uncertainty of players.

🤝 Respecting the player's intelligence

By avoiding loot boxes affecting gameplay, we make a bet:

The player prefers an honest and strategic experience, over an experience based on easy dopamine.

This is a bet on the long term, on trust and on respect.

Sidyq is a game that wants to reward intelligence and effort from the player. Not their wallet.

This is why, in Sidyq, every monster won is earned, every team is built, and every victory is yours.

(we still encourage you to dress up your best cosmetics!)
